Triveni’s Design Contest

Hello A-Team !

This week’s images are from the newly ended design contest from Triveni, in India. The featured designs on this blog, are all from fellow student Minal’s. I don’t know when the results of the contest will be published. BUT….we should ALL keep checking their website and hope that Minal wins !

The other picture is of the white board in classroom 209 in my Sew Like a Pro class. Hats off to Barbara !!!! When I was at a loss to explain how to sew up a mitered corner, she drew the perfect picture on the board !!!! Thank you again !!!!!

The classes:

Sewing Fundamentals: After marking our pattern markings on our cut pattern fabric, we are now reading our pattern guides and sewing up our shirts and pants. The biggest lessons learned this week are sewing commandments 13 and 14: Seams are second chances for perfect fit. AND The iron is your friend. We also had a machine embroidery lesson last Thursday.

Sew Like a Pro: Last week, we learned how to do Closed kick pleats, Inverted kick pleats, and Open kick pleats with a mitered corner. Then we started to learn how to Fussy Cut even plaids. Next week, we will be making “baby” or full size skirts in on-grain plaid, “baby” bias plaid skirts, self-piping, and tubing. I just want you to know, that I timed myself as I matched up my plaid fabric. It took me 4 hours and I didn’t cut anything yet. This is normal. The more time spent on prepping the fabric, the more expensive the garment will come out. I have heard rumblings that you want to learn how to insert an invisible zipper. We will talk about this, in Monday Night’s class. Besides the zipper, you will have to by an invisible zipper kit.

Some Great Links:

This one is from Anet. EXCELLENT SEAM and SEAM FINISHES Article from Threads. Thank you Anet !!!!! I would have never known about this. Now the entire A-Team can read and learn !!!!!!

This link is from the United Kingdom. It is all about the methods used to insert plackets in shirt sleeves. This is a terrific article !!!! We will be studying shirt sleeve plackets this semester. Here is your introduction !!!!

A Holiday “Beware” from the IT department:

Subject: Holiday email phishing and internet scams

To all District Staff:

First, let me say a heartfelt Happy Holidays to all of you. This year has gone by extra fast for me and I’m guessing for many of you as well..!

Please remember to be extra cautious this holiday season for email phishing and Internet scams. People on the naughty list have spent all year on thinking of ways to get your personal information, bank accounts, credit cards, online account ID’s, passwords, etc. They really count on us to be too busy and trusting!

This year, a new term has become mainstream called smishing, which is the introduction of urgent text message phishing to our mobile devices. Cyber criminals posing as your banks, credit cards, etc. may send an urgent text message asking for some personal information to avoid an account closure or credit card transaction denial, etc.

Free Mobile apps are another exposure. Please don’t install free apps on your smartphones or tablets that are cute but you really don’t need.

Consider the proverb which I believe was from Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, which has been restated over the last 100+ years, “It’s too good to be true, honey, it’s too good for true”!

Anyhow, please remember, most legitimate businesses, including your SDCCD Information Technology Services, will never text or email you asking for your password or personal information. (This also includes threatening to lock any type of account, deny transactions etc.) When in doubt, always follow up with a phone call, and if you do get a call from anyone pretending to be your bank or credit card company, ask them to confirm some of your information first, and unless you very sure it’s them, ask for their name and number and call them back.

Please have a safe, secure and relaxing Holiday Season! All the best!
